Formed in 1973 through the amalgamation of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler, Cambridge retains the distinct character of its three historic communities while functioning as a unified modern city. The city is known for its rich industrial heritage, beautiful architecture, and strong manufacturing sector.

The Grand River flows through Cambridge, providing scenic beauty and recreational opportunities throughout the city. Historic downtown Galt features well-preserved Victorian architecture, unique shops, and restaurants, while Preston is known for its European heritage and character. Cambridge is home to several major employers including Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, ATS Automation, and COM DEV, making it an important manufacturing hub. Highway 401 runs along the southern edge of Cambridge, connecting the city to Toronto (approximately 100 km east) and London (100 km west). Highway 24 (Hespeler Road) runs north-south through the city, connecting to Kitchener and Guelph. Highway 8 (King Street) runs east-west, linking Cambridge to Kitchener-Waterloo. Major roads include Hespeler Road, Eagle Street, Main Street in Galt, and King Street in Preston. The Grand River runs through the center of the city, dividing the former communities and creating scenic parkland corridors along its banks.
